[tuner23] more drag results with AMS cam

Well after the cam swap to our new cam the car felt better at 22psi of
boost than the ranger at 24psi of boost. Day after day it seemed a
little slower and then I could hear a nasty exhaust leak from the engine
bay, I though I cracked the header. I gave Darrell (a list member) a
ride saturday and the car just seemed off (I also added more fuel so it
was running rich). I took it in and found the leak, the gasket between
the turbo to exh. wastegate was gone! it was leaking like a sieve. I
took it apart and the gasket was blown out completely, the muffler on
the ext. wastegate setup broke loose from it's mount and all the weight
was on the wastegate and worked the bolts out. I pulled the muffler out
and changed the gasket. I had to turn the gillis valve way down now to
build 24psi of boost and the car felt awesome again, that exh. leak was
killing perf. Went to the track yesterday and I did just roll away
launches (2.6-2.9 60' times) so wouldn't break anything.. the first
run was a 111.6 mph run, the second 112.2 mph(pretty nasty head-wind,
our talon drag car was off by 1-2 mph and many people where saying that
they where off the trap speed also). ET's where 13.7-14.0 sec. ha!!
So the trap speed picked up from 107.5mph to about 112mph with the new
cam(still untuned on the dyno) compared to the ranger and low rpm
drivebability of the ranger cam is retained. On the Dyno the 107mph run
netted 300hp at the wheels(then after tuning we got 325hp, which works
out to about 109mph trap speeds), so using turbocalc it looks the car is
putting down around 350-355hp at the wheels, about 410-415hp at the
engine (on pump gas still). I tuned the base fuel maps(via EEC tuner)
driving around town so that the A/F wouldn't go lean on part throttle,
the driveability improved but the WOT was way rich because I left the
WOT multipliers the same and figured I'd tune it out on the dyno again
before going to the track. So the launch sucked, I'd drop the clutch
and it would chirp and bog, the car would roll out 10-20 feet coasting
until boost hit at around 3500rpm and then the tires would rip loose on
the track, and second would get really squirmy. I thought the no
muffler on the wastegate would sound bad but it actually sounded really
cool, almost had a supra like sound to it (high hp supra's have a very
distinctive exh. note). The clutch sucks bad, a clutch master pressure
plate and a 6 puck organic disk (unsprung-ouch!), it's like an on-off
switch and it you slip it a little it just heats it up instantly and it
slips the whole way down the track. Now I'm desperately looking for a
clutch/disc combo that works well at this hp level and also a rim/tire
combo so I can get traction without ring-gear stripping wheel hop.
