Chris,
I've had similar experiences and I think I know why:
adaptive controls. Here's how it works AFAIK, you
load in your shiny, new program and it runs great.
Unfortunately, your EEC doesn't like something
(anything!) about your fuel curve and starts trying to
compensate. About a week later, the engine takes 3
tries to start and runs like crap. Sound familiar?
As you may recall, I 'temporarily' installed a MAF so
quite a bit of tuning on my system has been involved.
BTW, many thanks to the folks that have helped on and
off List. Recently, I've been getting ready for my
bout with the Smog Nazis and I found the engine was
running pig rich and loading up badly at idle. As
I've worked to get the idle cleaned up, cruise and
mid-range power have improved dramatically. Why? So
far as I can tell, my tune isn't fighting the adaptive
control as much.
I really think a Wide Band would help a lot. Raymond
has a couple of new ones for sale. There's also the
diy-wb project, if you are good with that sort of
thing.
With a WB and a freshly-discharged KAM, you have a
small window of time to read what your fuel curve
really looks like. After a couple of minutes, the EEC
goes closed loop and starts trying to adjust things.
It seems to me that watching this process ought to be
very informative.
Does the new Tuner have datalogging support for the
PE?
Before you send yours back, try discharging the KAM
before changing the program. It will give you a
better baseline to work from.
Sorry this got so long. . .
